I thought paydirt was a scam until my uncle dragged me to a creek in Adams County
Two summers back my uncle kept telling me to get a metal detector and stop wasting money on guided digs, that creeks and plowed fields near old mill sites would give up more than any tour. Last week I finally went with him to a creek outside Peebles, Ohio and he pulled a flat button from a War of 1812 uniform out of a gravel bar in under an hour. That was the moment I stopped doubting him, since I had assumed those YouTube videos were staged. Now I'm reading about mill site maps from the 1800s and I keep thinking about all those paid digs I did. Does anyone here know a good way to spot a mill site on old plat maps without a degree in cartography?
