Hit 50 cataloged shards in one dig season and nearly cried

I was sorting through a test pit at a site outside Flagstaff last month when I realized I had bagged my 50th rim sherd. That number matters because my team set a goal of 40 for the whole season. We shattered that by early August, and I started wondering if we were digging in a prehistoric trash pit or someone's actual kitchen floor. Has anyone else had a milestone number sneak up on them like that?

Damn, that's a solid feeling and one hell of a season. I read somewhere that a single trash pit can have hundreds of sherds if families stuck around for generations, so you might just be in the middle of a real hot spot. Good on you for smashing that goal early.

Ngl it's crazy how much history is just buried under our feet in the most random spots.
