A field school instructor swore by trowel marks, and I finally get it
Back in 2018 at a dig outside Santa Fe, my supervisor kept saying proper trowel technique reveals more than any screen, and after 3 weeks of fighting the dirt, I found a tiny obsidian scraper that way. Has anyone else had a mentor insist on something that felt pointless at the time but totally clicked later?
Tbh the trowel thing clicked for me too, but not because it finds more stuff. It's more about the marks telling you how the soil was moved, like if it was dumped there or just sat there forever. The scraper was probably just sitting in the right spot, not hidden from the screen.
