Walked through downtown Portland today and counted 47 trees with girdling roots from old nursery straps
Who is still leaving those plastic ties and burlap on when planting, because I saw at least a dozen maples that will be dead in 5 years from that nonsense.

Actually the real issue isn't just the straps, its that most of those trees were planted way too deep too, which worsens the girdling problem. Martin.jamie is right that lazy planting kills trees, but if the root flare was exposed those straps would be a lot less deadly since surface roots can handle some restriction. I saw a Norway maple on 3rd that had both problems happening at once, which is basically a slow death sentence.
