Walked through downtown Austin last week and noticed something weird with the oaks

Almost every live oak on Congress Ave has these big bark splits running down the trunk, like 4 or 5 feet long. Any idea what causes that or is it just normal for city trees?

Used to just think it was some construction damage or bad pruning. Then I looked closer at a few and it's just the bark splitting as the tree grows, not anything dying. Normal for older live oaks in the heat.

Yeah, have you checked if those splits are oozing anything or just dry? That's usually just the bark stretching from heat stress and rapid growth, totally normal unless you see rot or bugs digging in.

And I'd add that @johnh82 is right about checking for ooze, but the bigger thing I've noticed is how many things in our daily lives are just harmless, cosmetic cracks. Everything from old sidewalks to leather jackets to those trees, we see a split and think something's broken, when really it's just the natural settling and aging of materials under stress. It's a good reminder that not every flaw is a failure, some of them are just signs of something holding up pretty well.
