Update: Had to pick between a $1200 stump grinder rental or a full day with a chainsaw and pickaxe for a massive oak stump.
Went with the grinder (even though my wallet cried) and got it done in 2 hours instead of 8, but now I'm wondering if anyone has a cheaper method for stumps over 3 feet wide?

What did you end up paying for the rental? I was always a "just burn it out" guy, but watching my neighbor try that on a big stump for three days (and barely make a dent) totally changed my mind. Sometimes the expensive tool is just the right answer.

My grandpa just drilled holes and waited for nature.

Is there a better feeling than watching something grow back without you lifting a finger? @perry.avery your grandpa had the patience of a saint. I tried the drill-and-wait method on a small stump a few years ago. It took so long I ended up just digging it out myself. Some of us don't have that kind of time.
