Unpopular opinion: I think the 'just top it' advice for a stressed maple is the worst thing you can tell a homeowner.
A guy in my neighborhood in Bellingham saw me pruning a storm-damaged limb and yelled, 'You're wasting your time, the whole thing needs a flat top to be safe,' which is exactly how you get a hazardous mess of weak water sprouts a year later.

Man, I used to say that too until I saw the awful regrowth.

Ugh, right? What did you see it on? I said the same thing about those super dark hair dyes, thought it looked great until it started growing out. You get that harsh line and it just looks so fake, like a bad wig. I had to grow mine out for months and it was a total mess. Makes you really think twice before doing anything permanent, doesn't it?
