The afternoon my climbing spikes saved a hundred year old oak

Last Wednesday I got a call about a dying oak in a backyard near Austin. The owner thought it was root rot, but when I climbed up I found a cable that had been strangling the main crotch for years. I spent four hours carefully removing the old hardware and installing a proper brace, and the tree looked like it could breathe again. Has anyone else found old straps or cables left by a past crew that caused more harm than good?

That bit about the tree "looking like it could breathe again" really hit me. I always figured old hardware was just harmless leftover, but seeing how a simple cable can choke out a hundred years of growth changed my mind completely.
