Just realized I was wrong about using a tarp for big chip piles

Always thought it was overkill until a sudden downpour in Portland turned a week's worth of chips into a soaked mess. How do you guys handle covering large volumes on a residential site?

@willowc60 I hear you on that... Portland rains can sneak up and ruin everything. But I've had the opposite experience. Tarps turned a pile I had into a sweaty, anaerobic mess that smelled like a swamp and took forever to break down. I actually prefer leaving piles uncovered here in the Pacific Northwest... the rain washes through and keeps the pile from getting too hot. A soggy mess is better than a steaming, smelly one that goes anaerobic in my book. Just gotta plan around the weather windows a bit better.

Tarps just trap moisture and make things worse.

Ugh, same! I was totally in the "let it breathe" camp until a freak storm last spring. Had a massive pile for a backyard project, and it turned into a solid, stinking brick in two days. Now I keep a cheap tarp and some bricks on the truck no matter what. That soggy mess is not worth the risk.
