Heard a city planner in Austin say all new street trees should be a single species for easier care. That seems like a huge risk to me.

Totally agree with you. That's a terrible idea. Putting all your eggs in one basket is asking for trouble. If a disease or pest hits that one type of tree, you could lose the whole street's canopy at once. It might make the city's job easier, but it makes the whole system way weaker.

Remember reading about a town in Oregon that lost 90% of its street trees to a single beetle. They all got Dutch elm disease at once.
