Climbing line got nicked on a fence rail during a takedown in Boise, do I retire the rope or can I cut and splice?

Heard about a guy in our gym who spliced his and it held fine for top rope stuff, but he retired it for lead after a few months. If you're taking whippers on it, cutting and splicing feels like a gamble I wouldn't take.
