Unpopular opinion: charging diagnostic fees is the right move, even for regulars
Had a guy last fall, called me out to his place in Tacoma for a fridge that wasn't cooling. I pulled the back panel, found a busted defrost timer, fixed it in 20 minutes. He hands me the cash, then says 'so you're not gonna charge me for the visit since it was quick?' I told him the trip cost me gas and an hour of my day, that's the fee. He grumbled but paid. The next month his neighbor called me for the same issue, said this customer referred me because I was honest. If I waive fees for easy fixes, I'm eating my own time. Anyone else hold the line on this and see it pay off later?
Wait, he actually said "so you're not gonna charge me for the visit since it was quick?" That is wild. You drove out, tore into his fridge, and diagnosed the problem, that is the job right there. Quick fix does not mean free fix, the knowledge is what he paid for.
