That retired plumber in Tucson who taught me about fridge compressors

Back in 2009 I was fixing a 15 year old fridge in a mobile home and the owner, this old guy named Ray, just sat there watching me the whole time. After I replaced the start relay and it kicked on, he said "son, that compressor is fine, it's the capacitor that quits first, always check that before you swap the whole unit." I've checked capacitors first ever since, saved customers a lot of money and myself a lot of headaches. Has anyone else had a customer who knew more than they let on?

Did Ray ever explain why the capacitor goes before the compressor, or was that just his golden rule?
