Shoutout to the guy at the supply house who showed me a trick with a multimeter
I was picking up a thermal fuse in Phoenix yesterday and overheard a tech telling another guy to check for a floating ground by putting one probe on the chassis and the other on a known good earth... tried it today on a weird dryer and found the issue in two minutes. What's the best quick diagnostic trick you've picked up from another repair person?

My old boss taught me to listen for the click before the compressor kicks on.

Actually that multimeter trick is checking for a voltage difference, which can point to a floating ground like Claire said. It's a solid real-world test. Reminds me of what @jana_henderson52 mentioned about listening for the relay click. Both are about using a simple step to rule out bigger problems fast. Like on a washer, if you hear the drain pump hum but no water moves, you know the impeller is shot without even pulling it out first.
