He was about to buy a new one when I offered to check the condenser coils. They were packed with dust and pet hair, a solid half inch thick. After a quick vacuum, the unit dropped 5 degrees in an hour and stopped running constantly. It made me realize how many people toss a machine over a simple cleaning job. Has anyone else saved an appliance from the curb with just basic maintenance?

Honestly, it's the same with cars! My buddy was convinced his AC was shot and quoted a huge repair. I popped the hood and the cabin air filter looked like a felt blanket, totally clogged. A ten dollar part later and the air was ice cold. It's crazy what we miss when we just assume the whole thing is broken.
