Overheard a guy at the parts counter say 'I never check the drain pump filter first' and I just stared.

Watched my buddy replace a whole drain pump on his washer. Machine wouldn't drain. He was convinced it was shot. Took me two minutes to pull the filter. A solid brick of coins, hair ties, and that sandy grit just fell out. He had the new pump in his hand and everything. Felt bad for the guy.

Honestly that mindset is wild to me. It's like skipping the easiest, most obvious step in a process (you know, the one that costs nothing but a few minutes). That filter gets packed with gunk from pockets and lint, and it's literally the first thing the manual tells you to check. Skipping it means you could be chasing a problem that doesn't exist, wasting time and money on parts you don't need. It just seems like a stubborn way to make a simple job way harder than it has to be.
