Unpopular opinion: The 'best anime of all time' threads are broken
I was reading a huge thread on another forum about the top 10 anime, and it was just a list of the same 5 shows from 10 years ago. Someone specifically said 'Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is objectively the best, no contest,' and it made me stop. That kind of talk kills any real discussion before it starts. How do we actually talk about what makes a show good without just ranking them?

Objectively the best" just means they've stopped thinking about it.

People do that with everything now, not just opinions. They find one thing that works for them and just freeze up, like there's no room left for new info. I see it at work too, where someone swears their way is the only way and they won't even look at a better method. It's just laziness, really. Nobody wants to admit they might be wrong, so they slap a label on it and call it a day. That's how you end up with people defending old ideas forever, even when the facts change.

Sometimes you can weigh the facts and reach a real conclusion. It's not always about personal taste. Calling something the best can just be the end of that search.
