Unpopular opinion: I used to skip subbed anime entirely

My buddy kept telling me the dubbed version of Attack on Titan lost a lot of the voice acting intensity from the original Japanese. I finally gave episode 1 a try subbed last week and yeah, he was right. Anyone else have a show that flipped you on subs vs dubs?

Watched Cowboy Bebop subbed after years of dubbed and suddenly understood what all the jazz timing fuss was about.

hold up, "all the jazz timing fuss" is actually crazy because i never even realized that was a thing until i switched to subbed too. i always thought the dub was fine but ngl the english voices kinda flatten out the rhythm of the show. the way the music hits with the japanese voices is just different, like the pauses and breaths actually line up with the beats. it's wild how much a language change can mess with the vibe of a whole anime.

Nah, I gotta disagree a bit. I've watched both versions a ton and honestly the dub's timing is actually really tight too, it's just different because English syllables work differently than Japanese ones. I think people hype up the sub timing because they already expect it to be better, you know?
