Unpopular opinion: I spent $60 on that new 'must watch' anime and it was a total letdown

Everyone on here was talking about 'Chronicles of the Starlight Blade' like it was the best thing ever. I bought the whole first season on Blu-ray after seeing all the hype. The story moved way too slow and the main character just whined for six whole episodes. I feel like I threw my money away on something people just say is good because it's popular. Has anyone else bought an anime based on forum buzz and been really disappointed?

And see, @ivanl76, that's kind of where I actually disagree with the whole review culture thing. I get why people do it, but I feel like if I watch too many reviews before picking up a show, it spoils the fun of just experiencing it fresh. Like, I went into Starlight Blade completely blind because I trusted the hype, and yeah it was slow, but I actually liked the whiny main character because he felt real to me by the end of the season. Reviews would have probably told me he was annoying and I might have skipped it, missing out on that growth. I think sometimes we over-rely on what other people say and forget that our own gut reaction matters just as much, even if we end up disappointed sometimes.

Did you check out any reviews before you bought it?

Oh for sure, I basically live in the review section before buying anything now. I mean, I'll watch a few video reviews to see the thing in action, then check written ones for long term stuff. It's crazy how you can spot the fake reviews too, like when they all say the same weird phrase. Honestly I trust random people online more than any official ad at this point.
