The guy at the anime club said subs are only for "real fans" and I can't stop thinking about it
I was at my local anime meetup in Portland last Saturday and this guy named Marcus said something that's been stuck in my head for days. We were talking about the new season and he goes "if you watch dubs you're not really watching anime, you're watching a cartoon." I just sat there because I didn't want to start a fight but it bugged me. I've been watching anime for like 8 years now and honestly some dubs are great, like the Cowboy Bebop one is basically perfect. What got me thinking though is how much this whole debate is about feeling like a real fan, not about the actual shows. We spent 20 minutes arguing about subs vs dubs and zero minutes talking about the actual episode we all came there to discuss. I've seen this happen at like 3 different meetups too, someone always brings up the sub vs dub thing and it kills the whole conversation. Does anyone else deal with this at their local groups or is it just a Portland thing?
