That one Redditor told me to skip the first three episodes of Steins;Gate and they were right
I kept quitting Steins;Gate around episode 3 because nothing was happening (just a lot of phone microwaving, you know?). A user named @futuristicweeb said I should tough it out through episode 12 because that's when the plot really kicks into gear. I was skeptical, but I finally tried again last month. By episode 9 I was hooked, and by episode 16 my jaw was on the floor. I would have missed out on one of the best time travel stories ever if I hadn't listened. Has anyone else ever dropped a hyped anime early and then regretted it?

My buddy Mark dropped Death Note after like the first 5 episodes because he thought Light was just some smug kid who got lucky. Then his roommate basically forced him to watch it during a boring weekend last year. By episode 10 he was texting me at 2am about how wrong he was. He finished the whole series in three days and kept saying he wished he'd watched it sooner. Now he's the guy who won't shut up about how people need to give anime more than a few episodes to build. Honestly it's kind of annoying but also he's not wrong.

So your buddy Mark basically lived that whole "I don't get anime" to "I'm now the anime guy" pipeline in record time, huh? My advice is next time someone says they dropped a show early, just tell them to fast forward to episode 7 or 8 and see if it clicks. That's usually where shows stop building and start hitting their stride. For Death Note specifically, once it really gets going around episode 8, it's hard to put down. Honestly your buddy's right that giving stuff more time changes everything, but he probably should've stayed chill about it instead of becoming that guy.
