Spent 4 months arguing about which episode to start a newcomer on

My buddy in Denver finally agreed to try anime and our whole server split between 'start at episode 1' and 'start at episode 13 for the hook', but nobody mentioned the dub vs sub fight that took 2 extra months to settle, so what do you all tell a total newbie when both sides are this stubborn?

Why not just skip the debate and show them the first episode that got YOU hooked in the first place? Four months of arguing over episodes is just gatekeeping with extra steps. If they get the vibe, they'll stick around for the slow build anyway. My rule is simple: episode one always, or no soup for you.

The "no soup for you" rule cracked me up, @wesleyburns. My buddy tried that exact approach with his brother-in-law last year, swore up and down episode one was the only honest entry point. So he sat him down with the pilot, watched him check his phone six times, and by the halfway mark the guy just said "when does it get good?" and left to make a sandwich. Now my buddy refuses to recommend any show to anyone ever again, like he's carrying some kind of personal trauma from it. Maybe the real move is just accepting some people aren't gonna click, no matter where you start.
