Showerthought: I got called out for my 'top 10 anime' list being all new stuff

A friend told me last month that my favorite anime list was just a bunch of popular shows from the last five years. He said, 'You're missing the classics that shaped the whole medium.' He was right. I realized I only talked about Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen. So I made myself watch one old series a month. I just finished Cowboy Bebop and it totally blew my mind. Has anyone else had a friend point out a blind spot in their anime taste? What older show should I watch next?

Oh wow, this is exactly what happened to me with music a few years back! My nephew made me listen to some older jazz albums and I realized I'd been missing out on a whole world of stuff that came before the modern stuff I loved. For you, I'd say give Legend of the Galactic Heroes a try, it's older but the story is so deep and the characters feel real, kind of like what Bebop does with its crew.

My cousin did something similar with movies, but it was westerns. He'd only seen the modern ones and I told him to watch The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. He called me after and his whole view on the genre was different. It's cool how one friend's comment can open a door like that. For your next show, maybe try something like Trigun. It has that same space western vibe as Bebop but its own weird heart.
