PSA: I just found out how much anime costs to make per episode
I was reading an old interview with a producer from Kyoto Animation, and they said a standard 24-minute TV anime episode costs about $200,000 to make on average. I always thought it was way more! That's for a normal show, not a big movie. It made me think about how tight budgets must be for some studios. Has anyone else seen other surprising facts about how anime gets made?

That number is wild, right? Makes you look at some of the cheaper-looking shows in a new light. I read a breakdown once about how a lot of studios basically run on debt from production committees, hoping a hit will pay it all back. It's a miracle we get as many good ones as we do with those tight budgets. Explains why so many animators burn out for such low pay too.

The production committee system actually funds most shows, not debt.

Man, that whole system is just depressing to think about... you see these amazing shows and then find out the people drawing them can barely pay rent. It really does make you watch some scenes differently, knowing how little time or money they had to make it. No wonder everything feels so rushed and people get chewed up and spit out. Kinda makes you feel guilty for enjoying it sometimes.
