My $45 manga box set from a convention had missing pages, was it a bootleg or bad luck?
Picked up a full series at a vendor in Chicago back in March, got home and found 12 pages torn out of volume 3, so is the convention discount worth the risk of getting a fake copy or should I just stick to official retailers from now on?

Hold on, let's not blame the convention just yet. You got a whole box set for cheap and you're mad about 12 pages? That's like buying a used car and complaining the radio presets are off. Most vendors at cons are just regular shops hauling their stock, and they get their stuff from the same distributors as everyone else. Twelve torn pages is way more likely a printing screw-up than some master counterfeit operation, and big retailers wouldn't take that back either unless you caught it fast. Honestly, the real risk is paying full price online and getting a scratched up "new" copy from a warehouse that smells like feet. You saved money, you learned something, and you can probably just go buy a single replacement volume for less than the difference. So yeah, keep shopping at cons, just flip through the books next time before you hand over cash.
