Just found out how many frames are in the first episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion

I was reading an old production blog from Gainax and they listed the exact frame count for episode one. It was over 4,500 individual drawings, which seems like a crazy amount of work for just twenty minutes. Does anyone know if that's normal for a TV anime from that time?

That's actually pretty low for the era.

What did you find that worked better back then?

Yeah, "low for the era" is a good way to put it. I was reading something the other day that broke down average numbers from back then, and it was pretty eye opening. Finleyk87 asked what worked better, and honestly a lot of stuff just had higher baseline stats before everything got balanced down. Makes you look at old guides in a whole new light.
