I watched the same show dubbed and subbed back to back last weekend

I finally got around to 'Spy x Family' and watched the first three episodes with the English voices, then switched to the Japanese track with subtitles. The subbed version just felt way more natural, especially for Anya's character, and the jokes landed better. Has anyone else had a show where the sub was a clear winner like that?

You said the jokes landed better subbed... but honestly, sometimes I wonder if we're just overthinking it. I watched a bit of that show both ways too, and yeah Anya's voice is different, but the story is still the same. It's not like the dub changes the plot. People get so heated about this stuff like it's a life or death choice.

Tbh the "life or death choice" part is exactly why these debates feel so silly.

Friend of mine got super into the "sub vs dub" thing for a show he loved. He spent three days writing a whole post comparing lip flaps and voice acting choices. Then his hard drive crashed and he lost all his game saves, his music library, everything. He just looked at his empty screen and laughed about how none of that voice actor drama mattered. Now he watches whatever's easiest, which is usually the dub while he eats dinner. Funny how fast those "life or death" choices turn into just picking a button on the remote.
