I think the hate for filler episodes is missing the point
Everyone says filler is a waste of time, but I just rewatched the G-8 arc from One Piece and it was a fun break from the main plot. It gave the crew time to just be themselves without a world-ending threat. Do you have a filler arc you actually liked?

You're right about filler giving the crew time to just be themselves. I see this a lot with TV shows too, where the best episodes are often the quiet ones where the characters just talk. It's like needing a calm day between big life events to remember who you are. The Kakashi mask episode in Naruto is a perfect example of filler that's just pure, simple fun.

Totally agree with you, @taylor.phoenix. Those quiet episodes build the heart of a show. Some of my favorite Star Trek: The Next Generation moments are just the crew playing poker in Ten Forward, not saving the galaxy. It lets you see them as people, not just heroes. That Kakashi episode is a classic for that same reason, just pure character fun without any world-ending stakes. You need those breathing spots to really care when the big stuff happens.

Ever notice how the poker table in Ten Forward often had different chips from different seasons? I used to watch that show as a teenager and my buddy would pause it to count the chip stacks, trying to figure out if they'd changed the game from season to season. It was our silly ritual. But that's the thing about those quieter moments, they let you notice the small details like that, the real world stuff sneaking into the fiction. For me, a good filler episode is almost like a home video of the characters, something you'd watch years later and just appreciate them hanging out.
