Hit 500 episodes on my backlog tracker and I feel like I'm failing at anime

So I keep a list of anime I want to watch. Nothing fancy, just a notes app thing. Last week I counted and it hit exactly 503 shows and movies I haven't seen yet. That's like 3 years of watching non stop if I did nothing else. I honestly thought I was keeping up fine but somehow the list keeps growing faster than I can watch. How do you guys even manage your watch lists? Do you just give up on some shows or trim them down somehow?

I read somewhere that the average person only watches like 10-15 shows a year, so 500 is basically a lifetime. Maybe it's just me but I think it helps to not treat it like a homework assignment. I just add stuff and forget about it, then randomly pick something when I'm in the mood.

Figure out how many of those 500 shows are actually FINISHED series. That's the real kicker everyone ignores. I bet half of them are shows that got canceled after one season or just never got a proper ending. 500 unfinished shows is just a graveyard of cliffhangers and wasted time. That's why I actually track what I watch - not to make it homework, but to know if something is actually worth starting. Nothing worse than binging 30 episodes only to find out it got axed on a cliffhanger.
