Had a debate about sub vs dub with my barista, now I'm second guessing myself
I was grabbing coffee at the shop on 14th street last week and my barista, this guy named Leo, said he only watches dubs because he reads subtitles for work all day and can't relax with them. At first I laughed it off, but then he pointed out how much of the original voice acting I probably miss in the emotional scenes, like the big reveal in episode 17 of that mecha show we both like. Now I'm sitting here wondering if I've been selling the Japanese performances short for like 8 years. Has anyone else flipped their stance on this after a random conversation?
See the thing about that Leo guy is he might be right but also wrong at the same time. I flipped the other way a few years back when I realized I was reading the subs so fast I was basically just skimming the show. Like those big emotional scenes, you know the ones where the voice actor takes forever to say one word and every pause matters. If I'm reading ahead, I'm waiting for the sub to catch up instead of actually feeling the moment. So I switched to dub for certain shows and now I catch all the little breathing sounds and shaky voices that the subs just flatten out. But honestly for comedies with fast talking characters, subs are still better because the dub actors always sound like they're trying too hard. It really depends on the show, not the format.
