Spent a rainy Saturday at a camera swap meet and it fixed my focusing problem

I was at the local camera swap meet in Portland last month, just browsing the old gear tables. A retired photographer named Don tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I ever used a magnifier on my waist-level finder. I tried his old Mamiya C330 with a little flip-up magnifier, and suddenly my portraits were sharp as a tack. Has anyone else had a random stranger's tip fix a basic technique you thought you had down?

My buddy Jerry had the exact same thing happen at a hardware store two years back. Some old electrician saw him squinting at a wire stripper and showed him a trick with the thumb screw that saved like twenty minutes per job. It's funny how many little secrets are just walking around in retired people's heads waiting for someone to ask.
