PSA: It Took Me 3 Weeks To Find A Hair In My Film Gate, Not The Lens
So I kept seeing this tiny dark squiggle on my scans from my Pentax K1000 and I was sure it was dust on the rear element. I cleaned that lens four times with a blower and microfiber, wasted half a roll of Portra 400 testing it, and even drove to a shop in Portland to have the glass checked. The guy there looked at the negs and said the mark was in the exact same spot on every frame, which meant it was sitting right at the film gate. Sure enough, there was a tiny cat hair curled up near the shutter. Here is the debate though: some folks say you should never touch the gate with anything but a blower, while others swear by a wooden toothpick wrapped in tape. Which side are you on, and how long did your dumbest camera mystery take to solve?
