Picked a 50mm f/1.8 over the 35mm for my trip to Buffalo and I'm second guessing it

I shoot a Canon AE-1 and had to borrow one lens for a weekend trip to Buffalo, so I grabbed the 50mm f/1.8 over the 35mm f/2 because the 50 was lighter and I figured I'd want the extra stop for indoor shots at the old train station. Came back and half my street shots feel cramped, like I'm always backing into a parked car to fit the buildings in. The indoor stuff turned out fine, but now I'm wondering if the wider lens would've been the better all-rounder. How do you all decide between a normal lens and a wide one when you only get to carry one?
