Overheard a photo student say film is just 'ugly filters'
Kid at the cafe was bragging about his digital setup and called film 'just taking pictures with ugly filters on purpose.' Made me wonder how many newbies are skipping the real learning curve and just chasing a look instead of understanding exposure curves.

Laughed out loud when I read this because it hit way too close to home. I literally spent my first year of photography convinced I was a creative genius because I was shooting film, when really I was just bad at metering and blaming the "vintage look" on the film stock. The irony is that learning to expose properly on film taught me more in six months than I learned in two years of digital shooting. Now I shoot both but mostly I just take bad photos on whatever format I'm holding, ugly filters or not.

Oh man, that kid's gonna have a fun surprise when his "perfect" digital shots don't look half as interesting as a badly metered roll of Portra. Reminds me of the time a buddy of mine spent a hundred bucks on a Leica just to shoot black and white with the contrast cranked all the way up, claiming it was "pure photography." Meanwhile I'm over here with a beat up Canon AE-1 from a pawn shop that cost less than his lens cap, and he's still asking me why his shadows are completely blown out. Guess the ugly filter only works if you actually know what you're doing first, right?
