My grandfather's old enlarger smelled like a time capsule last Sunday
Last Sunday I dug out his Durst M600 from the basement to print a roll of Tri-X I shot 3 years ago in Salt Lake City. The condensers had dust I had to clean with canned air, but that metal and glass smell brought back every darkroom session we had when I was 15. Anybody else ever get more from the gear's history than the actual print?
Does the smell of old gear ever hit you harder than the pictures themselves? My dad's Pentax K1000 has this mix of leather and old oil that gets me every time I open the bag. I shot a roll through it last month and the photos were fine, nothing special, but just holding that camera made me remember him showing me how to load film when I was like 12. The prints went in a drawer but I kept the camera on my desk for a week just to keep smelling it. Sometimes the tool carries more of the person than the art does, and that's okay with me.
