Hand-rolled the film in a hotel bathroom, now I can't go back to lab processing

Stuck in Portland for a wedding with no darkroom access, I tried developing a roll of Tri-X 400 in the hotel bathroom using a changing bag and a Paterson tank with the developer at 68 degrees. It worked shockingly well, sharp negatives with zero scratches, but it took 45 minutes of careful temperature babysitting with a digital thermometer. Now I'm arguing with my buddy who swears lab processing is worth the $12 a roll for consistency, while I think the control and cost savings beat it every time. Has anyone else made the switch to hotel-room developing, or am I just fooling myself?
