Blew $170 on a "pro" light meter that reads two stops off in shade, so there goes my portrait weekend
I picked up a used Sekonic L-358 at the camera swap in Portland about six weeks ago and the guy swore it was dead on. I shot a whole roll of Portra at the park with it, trusted the shade readings, and every single frame came out muddy and underexposed, like someone dragged the shadows slider the wrong way. Took the meter to my buddy who has a calibrated one, we compared them side by side in open shade, and mine was reading about two stops hot, so I'd been closing down when I shouldn't have. $170 plus $14 a roll for the film and $11 for developing, so call it $195 to learn that a swap meet handshake means nothing. The worst part is my old $30 eBay meter was actually fine, I just wanted something with a fancy incident dome. I've since taped a sticky note on the thing that says "MINUS 2 IN SHADE" but it still bugs me every time I pull it out. Has anyone sent a meter in for calibration, and did it stay put after, or am I better off just learning the Sunny 16 rules by heart?
