Warning: My sprinkler system flooded the neighbor's yard during a freeze
Two winters ago, my backflow preventer cracked during a cold snap in the Northeast Heights. I didn't winterize it properly, and it sent a steady stream of water right under the fence. My neighbor, Mr. Garcia, called me over to show me the new pond in his xeriscape. I shut off the main valve immediately and paid $350 for an emergency plumber to replace the part. Has anyone else had a similar freeze disaster with their irrigation?

Yeah, that backflow preventer cracking is a classic freeze move. After mine went, I started using those foam insulation covers you can get at any hardware store. The key is to put them on BEFORE the first real cold snap hits, not after.

Thought it was overblown until my neighbor's pipe burst and flooded their garage. Changed my mind real quick after seeing that mess.
