Thought that $400 whole house water softener quote was a ripoff, then I saw my shower head
Got a quote of $400 to install a water softener at my place near Eubank and Constitution, and I laughed at the guy. Our water is hard here, around 17 grains per gallon, but I figured a $30 filter from the hardware store on San Mateo would do the job. Three months later my shower head looked like a limestone cave and the dishwasher was leaving white film on everything. I finally caved and paid it, and within two weeks the spots on my glasses were gone and my skin stopped feeling like sandpaper after showers. Should have done it two years ago instead of buying bottled water every trip to the grocery store. Anyone else on well water or city water here dealing with the same crusty faucet situation?
That "limestone cave" line made me laugh because I know exactly what you mean. My faucets out here in the northeast heights get that same white crust and I used to think it was just soap scum. Hard water is a real pain and no little screw on filter is going to fix 17 grains. You basically proved the guy's quote was fair. I bet your water heater lasts longer now too, since it isn't fighting all that mineral build up.
