That fancy irrigation system my neighbor swore by? It actually worked after 3 months of doubt
I put in a drip irrigation setup last spring for my backyard garden near the South Valley, thinking it'd just be another overhyped project. My neighbor kept telling me it would save water and time, but I was skeptical since I've always just used a hose. After three months last summer, my water bill dropped by $40 and my tomato plants didn't dry out once. Has anyone else found a home upgrade that surprised them like this?

My rain barrel setup was kind of the same way. I hooked it up to my downspout last fall and figured it would get gross or something, but by midsummer I was watering all my herbs with free water. The biggest surprise was how clear it stayed... I was expecting mosquito problems but a simple screen fixed that. My basil went crazy once I stopped using tap water on it.

Just a heads up, rain barrels can get funky if you don't clean the screens regularly. I had to scrub mine out mid-summer after some algae showed up.
