Saw a house on my walk in Barelas with 6 rain barrels hooked to one downspout
I walk my dog through Barelas most mornings and last week I stopped to look at a place on 4th that had six blue barrels chained together off a single downspout. The owner was out front and told me he cut his water bill by about $40 a month since he started catching rain for his tomatoes. I had no idea that was even allowed here, and now I'm wondering if my HOA would let me try something smaller like two barrels off the back gutter. Has anyone gone through the city rebate paperwork for rain catchment, and was it worth the hassle?
Wait, six barrels off one downspout and he's only saving $40 a month? That seems like a ton of work and yard space for not much money back. I'd double check that savings claim before you start drilling holes in your gutters, because a couple barrels for your tomatoes is one thing but chaining six together sounds like a hobby more than a real money saver. Also, is the HOA really the problem here or is it the city rules? Those are two very different fights and I'd figure out which one you're actually up against before buying anything. If it's just about keeping some plants alive during a dry spell, fine, but don't expect it to pay for itself.
