Rant: My neighbor's rental property is dragging down our whole block's value
I overheard a realtor showing a house two doors down last week. She told the buyers that the crumbling stucco and dead grass at the rental property three houses up was a red flag for the neighborhood. It's a single unit owned by some out-of-state landlord who clearly doesn't care. I've called the city about the weeds three times now and nothing changes. Meanwhile, I just spent $4,000 on a new roof and paint for my place trying to keep things decent. Anyone else dealing with an absentee landlord making your street look trashy?

oh man, my friend sarah had this exact problem on her block in detroit. this one rental two houses down from her, the landlord was some guy living in florida. the grass was up to your knees, the porch had a rotten step with a board just laid across it, and the garage door was hanging off one hinge. she called the city like six times about the weeds and the trash piling up, and they finally sent someone out who just left a note taped to the door. nothing ever got fixed, and when she tried to sell her place, the agent actually told her to paint her front door a bright color to distract people from looking down the street.

did they ever figure out who that landlord even was, @vals38? i swear some of these out of state owners just let properties rot until someone forces them to sell.
