Rant: my 1952 place in Nob Hill has plaster walls and I just learned what that costs me
So I had a guy come out last week to give me a quote on hanging some shelves and patching a crack in the hallway, nothing crazy. He pokes at the wall for a second, looks at me, and says plaster means everything takes three times as long, and his quote came in at $1,150 for what I figured was a $400 job. I laughed, then I realized he wasn't joking. Turns out my whole house is rock lath with a plaster skim coat, and you can't just zip a screw in like drywall, you have to find the stud, drill it, and half the time the old plaster crumbles around the hole anyway. He told me his last plaster job took him two extra days just on patching and sanding because the surface is never flat to begin with. Now I'm sitting here looking at every little hairline crack in this house like it's a bill waiting to happen. Anybody else in an older place around here get blindsided by this, and did you just live with the cracks or actually pay to fix them?
