Question about drywall patching near the Rio Grande

I moved into a 1950s house in Albuquerque six months ago and kept noticing cracks forming along the ceiling joints every spring. Last month when we had that big wind storm, a whole corner piece of drywall popped loose and fell into the hallway. My neighbor who's been here 30 years came over and told me the original lath and plaster was underneath and I'd been patching with the wrong joint compound. Anybody else deal with old plaster under drywall and what do you use for repairs?

Ugh that sounds SO frustrating, old plaster is the worst to deal with.
