Pro tip: Xeriscaping can be a money pit if you're not careful
I figured switching to a desert landscape would save water and cash. The soil prep alone cost me over five hundred dollars. Then half the plants I bought died in last month's heat wave. Now I'm staring at a yard full of rocks and dead shrubs. Every weekend I'm out there trying to fix it, but it just gets worse. I should have listened to my neighbor who warned me about the upfront costs.

My local extension office (they're free, by the way) said most people skimp on mulch depth. Without enough mulch, the soil gets too hot and fries the roots, which might be what happened to your plants.

Yeah, that's such a common mistake.

Look at what @hugo_cooper said, that's just how it goes for any big yard project. You had some bad luck with the heat, but the long-term savings on your water bill will be huge. Calling it a mistake now is way too early.
