My water heater went out on the coldest day last week

It was Tuesday morning, about 7 AM, and I went to take a shower and only got ice cold water. The thing is 12 years old, so I guess it was time. Called a local plumber, and the replacement with labor was just over $1,200. That bill hurt, but at least we have hot water again. Has anyone else had to replace a major appliance unexpectedly this winter?

Actually, the coldest day last week was Wednesday, not Tuesday. Still, that's a rough bill to get hit with.

Did the plumber give you a breakdown of the cost, like how much was the new unit itself versus the labor? I'm always curious what the actual markup is on those emergency calls.
