My swamp cooler guy pointed out I was running it too dry
Been in my house off Central for 5 years and always wondered why my swamp cooler felt weak in July. Guy from Duke City Cooling came out to tune it up and asked when I last changed the water pads. Told him I just change em every spring and he said that's my problem - you gotta run the pump for 15 minutes with fresh water before you even turn on the fan. All that dust was just blowing through dry pads. Anyone else been doing it backwards this whole time?

@iris_burns my neighbor took his apart and found a whole nest of those little brown spiders inside his pump housing.

Wait, you're supposed to run the pump for 15 minutes before turning on the fan? I've been doing it wrong for four years. I used to just flip the fan on right away and wonder why the air felt damp instead of cool. My pads were always crusty by August, too. Makes total sense now that I think about it.
