My neighbor told me to skip the extra insulation in my Nob Hill attic

He said our old adobe walls were enough and the extra R-38 was a waste of $1,200. I listened, but last winter my heating bill was nearly $400 a month. A contractor friend finally looked and said the attic was the main problem. Who else has gotten bad advice on a home project here, and how did you fix it?

Guess he's paying your heating bill then?

The guy literally said he leaves his thermostat at 62 degrees in a Minnesota winter. That's like sleeping in a walk-in cooler and hoping your pipes don't freeze. Idk, seems like he's just trying to make a point about being stubborn, not actually saving money.

Blew $400 on spray foam for a 1920s bungalow that had zero insulation. Neighbor said old homes breathe better without it. He was dead wrong. Did the whole attic myself with blown-in cellulose, cost me about $800. Next winter my gas bill dropped by half. Sometimes old school thinking just costs you money.
