Just found out my HOA fee is paying for a pool I can't even use

I was going through my annual HOA budget report last night and noticed a line item for pool maintenance that's like $12,000 a year. That seemed high so I dug into the meeting minutes from 2019 and found out they voted to keep the community pool open only for residents over 18 due to insurance costs. I've got two kids and we moved here partly for that pool. Nobody told me about this when I bought the house three years ago. The real estate agent never mentioned it and the disclosure papers didn't say a word. Now I'm paying $85 a month in HOA dues and my kids can't even splash around on a hot afternoon. Has anyone else dealt with hidden HOA rules like this in Albuquerque?

Is this really that big of a deal though? Kids have plenty of ways to cool off around here without a pool, like sprinklers or the city splash pad. Youre probably paying more for the six months of liability coverage than the actual water, so it's not like youre flushing money down the drain for nothing.

Yeah but liability coverage on a pool is still money you’re paying for something you can’t even fully enjoy.

Wait, isn't the whole point of an HOA pool that everyone in the family can use it? I used to shrug at these complaints too, but reading your story totally flipped my opinion. You're right, they should have told you upfront.
