I just paid my 120th mortgage payment on my house near UNM
It hit me that I've been paying for this place for a full decade now. Honestly, I'm not sure if I'm proud or just tired of writing that check. How many payments in are you guys, and does it ever start to feel different?

Congrats on hitting triple digits. My payment counter is stuck somewhere in the 70s, so I'm still in the "this is a very long car loan" phase of denial. The only thing that feels different is the property tax line on the escrow statement, that number definitely has its own personality now.

Notice how we all end up tracking these weird, made-up numbers that suddenly mean everything. Your property tax line, my remaining payments, it's like we're all just watching different scoreboards for the same adult life game. The bank picks a number and then our whole sense of progress gets tied to watching it tick down or, worse, jump up. Makes you wonder what we'd fixate on if these systems weren't built to keep us constantly checking in.

Remember setting up that auto-pay a decade ago and basically forgetting the count. Hit 120 a while back and the feeling is mostly just quiet, you know, like the house is finally settling in with you. What helped me was looking at the original loan paper and seeing how much of the payment actually goes to the house now versus just interest at the start. That number changing is the only real update I get, and it does start to feel like you're building something solid instead of just renting from the bank.
